What Keeps Us From Becoming?
Series: What is Man
What keeps us from becoming who we’ve been redeemed to be?
Even after we’ve chosen Christ, many still struggle to live in their new identity. Apostle McCreary reminded us that the challenge isn’t just the world around us—it’s our own minds wandering away from the truth.
Key Scripture
“But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt… and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”
(Ephesians 4:20–24, NKJV)
(Ephesians 4:20–24, NKJV)
The word “wander” means to move without direction, to drift, or to lose contact with purpose. That’s what happens when we forget who we are in Christ.
Main Points
- The Struggle – Our wandering minds
- We often move without aim, distracted by culture, emotions, or pressure.
- When we forget God’s truth, we start living like the old man again.
- The Renewal – A different way of thinking
- Paul tells us to “be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”
- Renewal doesn’t happen once—it’s a daily choice to let God’s Word reshape us.
- The Practice – Living the new life
- Putting on the new man is active. It means speaking God’s Word, guarding our thoughts, and walking in righteousness.
- Spiritual growth happens when we discipline our minds to stay focused on Christ.
Real-Life Application
Think of your thoughts like a steering wheel—wherever your mind goes, your life follows.
The more you practice renewing your mind, the less room there is for wandering.
- When you feel pulled back into old habits, stop and declare God’s promises.
- Replace negative thoughts with scripture you’ve memorized.
- Surround yourself with believers who will remind you of your true identity.
The more you practice renewing your mind, the less room there is for wandering.
What areas of your life still feel tied to the old self?
How can you invite God’s Word to renew your thoughts this week?
