Lesson 2: He Is Him

Apr 12, 2026    Apostle Tyronne McCreary

MAIN IDEA

Culture tells people to become their own source of identity, worth, and validation.

But Scripture teaches that everything humanity was meant to be is found in Christ.

Culture says: “Be him.”

Scripture says: “Be in Him.”

KEY THOUGHT

All that humanity has the potential to be restored to and have is secured and established in Him:

Our identity is not rooted in what we can achieve for ourselves, but in Christ.

CULTURE IS FORMING IDENTITY ON THE WRONG FOUNDATION

We are living in a time where identity is being shaped by culture instead of Christ.

Three false foundations culture promotes:

Self-made identity — “I define who I am”

Performance-based worth — “My value is based on what I do”

External validation — “I need others to affirm who I am”

Kingdom Truth:

Identity, worth, purpose, and fulfillment are not found in self-construction.

They are found in Him.

DISCIPLESHIP IS ABOUT FORMATION, NOT INFORMATION

Jesus did not call disciples merely to learn His teachings.

He called them to be formed into His likeness.

Luke 6:40

“The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.”

A true disciple learns to:

adopt the master’s worldview

embrace the master’s values

mirror the master’s lifestyle

reflect the master’s character

Key Point:

Not just informed—formed.

JOHN PREPARED EXTERNALLY, JESUS TRANSFORMS INTERNALLY

Mark 1:7–8

John’s ministry:

external preparation

baptism with water

repentance as a sign

Jesus’ ministry:

internal transformation

baptism with the Holy Spirit

real empowerment

life from the inside out

Key Point:

John dealt with what people did. Jesus deals with who people become.

CHRISTIANITY IS NOT JUST AGREEMENT — IT IS INDWELLING

Romans 8:9

“If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”

Belonging to Christ is not just:

agreement

affiliation

behavior

It is indwelling.

Key Point:

The Holy Spirit is the indwelling presence of God who makes the life of Christ a lived reality in the believer.

WHAT “IN HIM” REALLY MEANS

“In Him” is not just a phrase. It is a spiritual reality and a position.

“In Him” means:

your life is located in Christ

your identity is located in Christ

your resources are located in Christ

your future is located in Christ

Key Point:

Everything God has for you is located in Him.

THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS US INTO THIS REALITY

The Holy Spirit is not just an experience.

He is the One who brings us into Christ and forms Christ in us.

The Spirit:

indwells us

incorporates us into Christ

empowers us to live from Christ

Key Point:

We do not just believe in Him. We live from Him.

CHRIST IS THE DOMAIN WE NOW LIVE FROM

Colossians 1:13

This is domain language.

A domain includes:

Authority — Who is in charge? Christ is Lord.

Order — What governs life? His truth and righteousness.

Influence — What shapes identity and conduct? His Spirit and nature.

Key Point:

“In Him” is the realm where His authority rules, His presence fills, and His life defines us.

JESUS IS NOT JUST SAVIOR AND LORD — HE IS TEACHER

A Savior delivers you.

A Lord rules you.

A Teacher forms you.

Key Point:

You cannot call Him Teacher and ignore His message.

THE CENTRAL MESSAGE OF JESUS IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Mark 1:14–15

Jesus came preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God.

His message was not merely about personal salvation.

It was about the reign and rule of God breaking into human reality.

The Kingdom means:

the rule of God

the reign of God

the domain of God

life under His authority

Key Point:

The central message of Jesus was the gospel of the Kingdom of God.

REPENTANCE IS NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND JESUS

To receive the message of Jesus, our thinking must change.

Repent means:

change your mind

realign your thinking

come into agreement with God

Key Point:

We will not understand His gospel, His actions, or His person unless our minds are renewed.

JESUS TEACHES US THAT COMMUNION WITH THE FATHER COMES BEFORE PUBLIC MINISTRY

Mark 1:35

Jesus rose early and went to a solitary place to pray.

Before returning to ministry demands, He went to the Father.

Lesson:

Public power is sustained by private prayer.

Key Point:

Prayer is not optional. Communion with the Father is the lifeline of everyone who is in Him.

JESUS TEACHES US THAT PURPOSE MUST BE GREATER THAN POPULARITY

Mark 1:36–38

The disciples told Jesus that everyone was looking for Him, but Jesus remained governed by purpose.

He was not led by crowds.

He was led by calling.

Lesson:

Attention must never distort assignment.

Key Point:

A disciple must learn that being sought after is not the same as being sent.

JESUS TEACHES US THE HEART OF GOD THROUGH COMPASSION

Mark 1:40–41

Jesus was moved with compassion and touched the leper.

Mark is not just revealing what Jesus can do.

He is revealing what Jesus is like.

Jesus teaches us:

how to see people

how to respond to brokenness

how to carry truth with compassion

Key Point:

Being a disciple is not just learning His doctrine. It is learning His heart.

DISCIPLESHIP MEANS BEING FORMED BY JESUS

Discipleship is more than receiving from Jesus.

It is being shaped by Jesus.

If we are truly in Him, then we must:

adopt His priorities

embrace His purpose

reflect His compassion

follow His pattern

CLOSING EMPHASIS

Mark is not only saying, “Look at His miracles.”

He is also saying, “Look at His manner.”

Look at: His prayer life, His priorities, His purpose, His compassion

Final Point:

If Jesus is truly our Teacher, then following Him means more than believing in Him.

It means becoming like Him.
